NIGERIA AT 66: OGUN YYP CHAIRMAN, ADEYEMI CALLS FOR PEACEFUL YOUTH PARTICIPATION AND STRONGER DEMOCRACY

As Nigeria marks her 66th Independence Anniversary today, October 1, 2026, the State Chairman of the Young Progressives Party (YPP), Ogun State Chapter, Hon. Adeyemi Solomon. Oluwaseyifunmi (ASO), has called on Nigerians especially the youths to shun violence, distractions and political apathy, and embrace active participation in the democratic process.

He said Nigeria’s independence is not merely a celebration of the country’s attainment of self-rule in 1960, but also a reminder of the sacrifices of the nation’s founding heroes and the responsibility of the present generation to protect, strengthen and advance the democratic values upon which the nation’s future depends.

According to him, Nigerian youths must recognize that they are not only leaders of tomorrow but important stakeholders in the Nigeria of today. He therefore encouraged youths across the country to join the political party of their choice, participate actively in political activities, obtain their Permanent Voter’s Cards, vote during elections and exercise their constitutional and civic responsibilities peacefully.

«“Our youths must refuse to be used for violence, destruction and political distractions. Rather, they should channel their energy, ideas and passion into constructive political participation. Join the political party of your choice, engage in the democratic process and make your voice count.”»

Hon. Adeyemi stressed that democracy becomes stronger when citizens participate meaningfully, respect divergent political opinions and hold leaders accountable through lawful and democratic means.

He further called on young Nigerians to use the opportunity of the 66th Independence Anniversary to demonstrate to the world that Nigeria is independent, democratic and capable of determining her political future through peaceful and credible civic participation.

«“At 66, we must tell the world that Nigeria is independent enough to make her own choices, independent enough to conduct her democratic affairs, and independent enough to allow her citizens, especially the youths, to freely participate in deciding the future of the country.”»

The YPP Ogun State Chairman urged political parties, religious institutions, traditional rulers, civil society organisations, the private sector and other stakeholders to continue promoting peace, tolerance, unity and responsible citizenship.

While acknowledging the challenges confronting the country, he said Nigerians must not lose hope, stressing that nation-building is a collective responsibility that requires the contribution of every citizen regardless of political affiliation.

He also called for constructive criticism of government and political leaders, noting that criticism should be accompanied by practical suggestions and solutions capable of moving the country forward.

Hon. Adeyemi reaffirmed the commitment of the Young Progressives Party (YPP), Ogun State Chapter, to promoting peaceful political participation, youth inclusion, democratic values and responsible leadership as Nigeria moves towards the 2027 general elections.

He urged Nigerians, particularly young people, to celebrate responsibly, remain peaceful and use their civic rights to contribute positively to the development of Nigeria.

Happy 66th Independence Anniversary, Nigeria! 🇳🇬
