June 12: Let Demonetize Political Office -NGIJ Urges Nigerians
As the country celebrates 20 years of uninterrupted civil rule the Nigerian Guild of Investigative Journalists (NGIJ) has called on politicians in the country to have the good of the masses at heart by adopting the best quality standard of democratic governance.
In a Press Statement signed by the President of the Guild, Mr. Wale Abydeen and made available to newsmen, the Guild stressed the need for the political class to play the game according to the rules, stressing that leadership position is meant to be a selfless service.
Abydeen noted that, "late Mashood Abiola (GCFR) is celebrated because of his selflessness and commitment to the ideals of good governance and popular democracy.
"This is a lesson for politicians of today to emulate. The country, at this time, is in dire need of patriots who will be ready to sacrifice themselves self for the general good of the people. As people who meant well for the nation, we must make sacrifices and render public service with or without monetary benefits”.
The guild which is a registered union of professional investigative journalists urges Nigerians to remain united and bury their differences so as to facilitate even development that would further strengthen the nation's democracy.
“ Our unity is for our collective advantage as this is needed to take collective responsibility and decisions needed to put an end to bad governance in the country.” NGIJ stated.
