Repurposing Ogun State: An Inner Mandate for a New Direction, by Otunba Segun Showunmi
As I present myself for the governorship of Ogun State, I do so with a clear conviction: the future we seek cannot be engineered by government alone. It must be built from within by a people ready to learn, to change, and to demand more from both leadership and themselves. Repurposing Ogun is not a campaign slogan; it is a strategic framework for resetting how our state thinks, works, and prospers.
The first pillar of this vision is anchored on a simple truth: the desire to learn and the aspiration to change must come from within. No policy can substitute for personal responsibility. Ogun has always been a state of firsts of intellect, enterprise, and progressive thought. From our historic towns to our modern industrial corridors, we carry a legacy of excellence. But legacy alone does not guarantee relevance. We must reignite a culture where learning is continuous, where innovation is encouraged, and where every citizen artisan, entrepreneur, public servant, or student sees themselves as a stakeholder in the state’s transformation. My administration will invest in education and skills, yes but more importantly, we will inspire a mindset that refuses stagnation.
Secondly, governance must deliver a stronger sense of gain to our people. For too long, citizens have been asked to endure reforms without feeling their benefits. This must change. A repurposed Ogun State will be one where effort meets opportunity. Our industrial advantage must translate into jobs for our youth. Our proximity to major markets must benefit our local businesses. Our agricultural potential must create wealth for rural communities. We will design policies that are not only economically sound but socially rewarding ensuring that the dividends of governance are visible, measurable, and widely shared. Trust in government is not built through promises; it is built through outcomes people can see and feel.
The third pillar is perhaps the most critical: we must seek truth from fact. Governance must be driven by data, not guesswork; by evidence, not sentiment. Too often, decisions are shaped by noise rather than knowledge. Under my leadership, Ogun State will institutionalize a culture of accountability rooted in facts. We will measure what matters, jobs created, businesses supported, schools improved, lives impacted and we will be transparent about both progress and setbacks. This is how serious leadership earns credibility, and this is how sustainable development is achieved.
Repurposing Ogun State requires alignment between government and the governed, between ambition and execution, between rhetoric and reality. It requires leadership that is disciplined enough to focus on priorities and bold enough to challenge the status quo. I offer that leadership not as a claim of perfection, but as a commitment to purpose.
This is our moment to redefine what is possible. If we can ignite the inner drive for change, ensure that governance delivers real value, and ground our decisions in truth and fact, then Ogun State will not just grow it will lead.
The task is clear. The responsibility is shared. And the time to act is now.
