OGUN: NANS OGUN JCC decry illegal arrest of students, bemoan unjust killings of Students at Ipokia by Nigeria Customs Service (NCS)
Press Release
Date: Tuesday, 8th October, 2019.
.........As leadership of NANS Ogun Joint Campus Committee meets Commissioner of Police Ogun state
In our quest to find a lasting solution to the menace of incessant arrest of our students by some men of the Nigeria Police Force across the state, the leadership of NANS Ogun Axis met with the state commissioner of police and other Security chiefs for a prompt call to order and a relieved intervention.
The meeting occurred yesterday, 8th October, 2019 which highlighted series of unruly and sardonic activities of some unsent police men in our students areas in the name of apprehending internet fraudsters.
The leadership however seized the precocious avenue to demand a stop to the nefarious activities of those officers who used brutal force to arrest and intimidate innocent students in order to make unhealthy bribes into their private pocket.
Apparently, the commissioner of police Bashir Dabup Makama really gave a listening mind and ear toall issues discussed and favourably assured that the trends will not only be abated but totally stopped.
He therefore stressed that students should imbibe in eroding impunity and insanity by reporting any officer(s) found guilty of right infringement and unjust treatment.
CP Makama stated that indeed there is a war against cyber crime but men of the Nigerian Police Force must carry out activities in lieu with genuine evidence and act of professionalism, as any department found overriding the basis would be thoroughly dealth with, he warned the heads of departments.
It is also in this same consultative spirit that we totally condemn the uncivilized and destructive activities of the security personnels (especially the custom) towards the untimely death of some innocent students and injuries unleashed on citizens of Ihunbo community during the cause of a run-after with the smugglers.
In pursuance of our objective to protect for the rights of all Nigerian students, we do not only mourn the regrettable loss of our students of Ojumo Community High School, Ihunbo in Ipokia Local Government Area of the state, we seek justice. These boys can not just be another casualty swept under the carpet of history. Their death will not be inconsequential as we have had enough of the highhandedness and unprofessional recklessness of customs officials in that part of the country.
We hereby demand a drastic measures from the authority in order to bring culprits to book and as well compensate the families of the demised.
This we expressed dissatisfaction and call for prompt intervention of the commissioner of police and a warning message to the custom comptroller in the state as we believe to before-warned is to before-harmed.
More so, in an attempt to bridge all gaps and put a total halt to the fear of reprisal from the students end over the unjust act of some NPF men, we propose the establishment of the Police and Students forum (P/SF).
The aforementioned forum will remain a relationship maintenance platform between the students constituency and the Police force in Ogun state, in which CP Makama assured the leadership of NANS Ogun state of his consent as soon as all necessary procedures are being treated effectively from both ends.
Conclusively, we urge all our students in the gateway state to be law abiding, remain resolute and desist from any criminal acts and also shun the act of bribing any security personnel(s) rather to demand for their rights via appropriate reports to the right quarters.
