PDPNYL Felicitates with Chief Emeka Anyioku as he turns 85.
Press Statement
18/01/2018
We members of Peoples Democratic Party National Youth League feel privileged to put down these few words in honour of an outstanding Nigerian; a very distinguished diplomat whose service to humanity within and outside the country, especially in the United Nations speak volume.
An astute and urbane mind; a versatile administrator, imbued with great strength and inspirations; a man who holds 33 honorary Doctorate degrees from top universities in Britain, Canada, Ghana, Republic of Ireland, Nigeria, South Africa, Switzerland and Zimbabwe. We are talking about the third Secretary-General, Commonwealth,
Chief Emeka Anyioku, GCVO, CFR, CON, Ichie Adazie Obosi.
Today, we celebrate you and your contributions to building, promotion and sustenance of democracy in Nigeria and African at large.
Your involvement in numerous interventions to broker peace between several Commonwealth Leaders and opposition parties in their countries has earned you an enviable place in history. You frowned at the annulment of the June 12, 1993 election and issued a strident statement, saying that the annulment was a "severe setback to the cause of democracy, particularly at a time when all Commonwealth governments have pledged themselves to promote democratic rule in their countries"; you called it "a bitter disappointment" to all those who had been looking forward to the assumption of office of a democratically elected government in Nigeria
Your intervention in Zambia and other Commonwealth Nations to transit from one party or military regime to multi party democracy, especially how you persuaded President Arap Moi of Kenya to have the country's constitution to reflect a multi party system cannot be forgotten in a hurry.
We the members of PDPNYL are proud of you. As young people seeking to mold a generation of leaders that are worthy in character and skill, you present a perfect example of character worthy of emulation.
We therefore pray God to bless Nigeria with more of you, even as we wish you more fruitful years.
Happy 85 Cheers Sir!!!
Signed:
Solomon-Ukpai Ogbonna
Deputy National Publicity Secretary, PDP National Youth League
